Abstract: We are so used to the presence of light in our lives, we probably don't stop to think about it, unless there's a storm and a power cut! What most people don't realise is that light is used today for so much more than illumination. In this talk, I'll introduce some concepts that demonstrate how light has transformed our lives. I invite you on this short journey with me but be warned... I travel light!

Bio: Shanti Bhattacharya obtained her PhD in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1997. She was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt award in 1998 and worked at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany for several years. She subsequently joined Analog Devices, Cambridge, USA, where she worked as a design engineer. She is currently a Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras. She has served on the board of OSA (now called Optica) and is currently an Associate Editor of Optical Engineering and the Journal of Optical Microsystems. Her current research interests are meta and diffractive optics, optical MEMS and studies relating to imaging techniques.
