The Southern Lights across Australia

The AIP's solar physicists and space science researchers have explained what caused the intensification of the aurora australis in Earth's atmosphere over the weekend of May 11th - 12th 2024.

We cannot predict when solar storms or flares will occur. The variability of the Sun's spots combined with the current solar maximum to shoot coronal mass ejections towards Earth.
