1. Member (MAIP)

This is the normal professional grade for practicing physicists, and anyone who has completed an AIP-accredited undergraduate degree is automatically eligible. (For recent graduates from Australian universities not in this category, the Associate category is appropriate until further physics experience can be demonstrated; see (ii) below.)

Those that have obtained an undergraduate degree with a Physics major and are now continuing their studies in a full-time postgraduate qualification (e.g. PhD, MPhil or Masters) are eligible to be a Member (MAIP), for which the Member full-time student rate is applicable.

Formally, candidates for admission to the grade of Member shall have either:

(i) obtained a bachelor degree or equivalent (or a bachelor degree with Honours) with physics as a major subject  (such qualifications will need to be  assessed as being of at least equivalent standard to AIP accreditation requirements); or

(ii) shall have obtained a bachelor degree or diploma with a major in a cognate discipline (including astronomy and astrophysics, physical sciences, chemistry, geophysics, materials science, engineering, mathematics) and have at least three years professional experience in a role requiring a knowledge of physics (including teaching).

Please provide copies of degree certificate(s) with your major studies detailed (ie. not just a generic testamur). If your degree is in a cognate discipline, please also upload a file giving information about the nature and duration of your professional experience in a role requiring a knowledge of physics (including teaching). (Copies of documents are kept temporarily until membership is confirmed.)

Existing Members are encouraged to advise the AIP that they are retired or moving overseas to receive a discount. To do so please email the AIP: aip@aip.org.au.

2. Student Associate

Free online-only membership, without voting rights, for full-time Australian students, including undergraduate, Honours, Masters and PhD students, studying physics.

Those that have already obtained an undergraduate degree with a Physics major may apply for full Membership, MAIP.

If you are studying a PhD, MPhil and Masters degree it is worth considering upgrading to the membership level: Associate full-time student or Member full-time student to have full membership at a greatly reduced student fee ($ 60). You would receive physical copies of the Australian Physics magazine, voting rights, discounted rate for the AIP Congress and Summer Meetings, and the ability to apply for AIP awards, prizes and travel grants.

3. Associate Member

Associate Membership is available to (i) recent graduates in cognate disciplines (including astronomy and astrophysics, physical sciences, chemistry, geophysics, materials science, engineering, mathematics); and (ii) those who have a strong interest in physics.

Existing Associates are encouraged to advise the AIP that they are retired or moving overseas to receive a discount. To do so please email the AIP: aip@aip.org.au.

4. Fellow (FAIP)

Fellowship of the AIP recognises significant and acknowledged contributions to the field of physics. Contributions will normally include at least 10 years professional experience in (i) research and/or teaching; (ii) applications of physics in industry; (iii) leadership in industry or government.

Please provide a referral from an AIP Nominator and a AIP Seconder who are current AIP Fellows. Please also upload a CV or link to an online version.

Upgrade

Existing Fellows are encouraged to advise the AIP that they are retired or moving overseas to receive a discount on their membership fees. To do so please email the AIP: aip@aip.org.au.

Refunds:  AIP membership fees are non-refundable except in special circumstances such as hardship or death. This will normally be on a pro-rata basis and an administration fee may be applicable.
