2018 Australian Institute of Physics Industry Day Invitation

The space, aerospace and defence industries are early adopters of science and technology – and with swelling national aspirations in these areas, it is a perfect time for the AIP Industry Day to explore their intersections with physics community and physics-based technology.

Our invited speakers will include:

Technology pull from the three sectors – with guidance on partnering and funding
Technology push – reflections from companies translating technology into products
Partnership opportunities – large organisations/primes with an appetite to partner
Government agencies – providing the initiative and funding to ignite collaboration

Speakers include leaders from Northrup Grumman, Boeing, CSIRO, Australian Space Agency, BisAlloy, and DeltaV Newspace Alliance. The AIP Industry Day is pitched to people looking to engage with experts and each other – it will include ample time for getting to know new people and catching up with old acquaintances.

Site tours of the Lindfield complex over lunch – CSIRO, the National Measurement Institute, and also the Lindfield Collaboration Hub – a “deep tech” start-up co-location. Join us for an exhilarating, informative day where new connections are made.

The AGM will be held on the 2 November from 4pm – 6pm, Room 50-S201, University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus.

I am very pleased to announce that we will have two speakers bracketing the AGM, with the QLD nominee for the Bragg Gold Medal Dr Sarah Walden presenting her research; and the John Mainstone Youth lecture Tour presenter Dr Sean Powell.  More information about their presentations are provided below.

The expected timing of the proceedings will be as follows:

4.00pm – 4.50pm      Dr Sarah Walden presents her research

5.00pm – 5.15pm      AGM

5.15pm – 6.00pm      Dr Sean Powell – “Physics is everywhere!”  Presentation from the John Mainstone Youth Lecture Tour.

For catering purposes it would be appreciated if you could register your attendance by Tuesday the 30th of October  to aip_branchsecretary_qld@aip.org.au . Catering will involve pizza and cold drinks.

Dr Sarah Walden

Title: Nonlinear optical properties of ZnO and ZnO-Au composite nanostructures for nanoscale UV emission

Abstract: This thesis investigates the nonlinear optical properties of ZnO and ZnO-Au composite nanostructures. For applications such as photodynamic therapy, it is desirable to use nanoparticles to generate localised UV emission while illuminating them with visible or infrared light. This is possible using nonlinear optical processes such as two photon absorption. Nonlinear optical processes however, are extremely weak, so this work investigates the potential of increasing the efficiency of two photon absorption in ZnO nanoparticles by coupling them to metal nanoparticles. Using new experimental methods, the two photon absorption and resulting UV emission from the nanoparticles are measured.

Physics is everywhere! – a journey from sub-atomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe, where physics seeks to answer the most fundamental questions about reality. As we learn more, we can do more! Physics is everywhere in our world and underpins all our technologies. This year, Sean will discuss the important problems that all of us encounter every day: how do I teleport myself to school? What do I do when I find myself inside a black hole? Why is my time-machine not working? He will also talk about the superpowers that you can gain as a physicist, such as the ability to make accurate quantitative observations and predictive and interpretive mathematical models.  These powers mean that you can become very valuable and work in many industries such as fundamental physics research, economics and finance, space and aeronautics, healthcare and medicine, learning and teaching, electronics and computers, and so much more!

Join the AIP for a tour of FLEET labs at RMIT University

FLEET (the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies) is using atomically thin, two-dimensional materials to create new, ultra-low energy electronics – addressing the growing energy being consumed by computing.

Join us for a tour of the experimental laboratories of FLEET researchers Prof Lan Wang, Dr Jian Zhen Ou, and Dr Torben Daeneke.

As part of the lab tour you will see how FLEET researchers investigate avenues towards dissipationless electrical transport.

In the FLEET electronics lab (L12) Professor Lan Wang leads investigations of electron and spin transport in various stacked van-der-Waals heterostructures using low-temperature, high magnetic field systems.

In the FLEET optics lab (L12) Professor Wang’s group is establishing a Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) system to investigate 2D ferromagnetism, and a photon-current system to investigate the photon current effect. Dr Jian zhen Ou and Dr Torben Daeneke are investigating plasmonics in 2D materials using scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM).

The RMIT Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility (L7) is where all of FLEET’s nanodevices are fabricated using high-quality electron microscopy and microanalysis equipment including Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs) and Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs) that can magnify up to 10 million times, sufficient to see atomic structure.

Physics cleaning up at the Eurekas; physicist named CSIRO Chief Scientist; awards and opportunities; and more

It’s been a busy month for physics with hundreds of events taking place around the country as part of National Science Week. About 30 of those were presented by UK plasma physicist Ceri Brenner, AIP’s 2018 Women in Physics lecturer. Ceri spoke about Igniting stars with super intense lasers, and shared her passion for physics with hundreds of people around Australia at school lectures, public lectures and meetings. Ceri was also featured in a segment on ABC’s The World talking about developing the world’s most powerful lasers. More below on Ceri’s tour.

I was personally delighted to hear that Past AIP President Cathy Foley is CSIRO’s new Chief Scientist. Cathy has played an integral part in the direction of the Australian Institute of Physics—she was the 2007-2008 AIP President and is currently on the Women in Physics Committee. She will step into the new role at the end of September to help champion science, and its impact on, and contribution to, the world. We wish Cathy all the best in her new role.

Four of this year’s Eureka prizes were won by physicists. Congratulations to the following individuals and teams:

  • The Optical Physics in Neuroscience team from the University of Queensland for the 2018 UNSW Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research
  • Mohsen Rahmani from Australian National University for the 2018 Macquarie University Eureka Prize for Outstanding Early Career Researcher
  • The Sapphire Clock Team from The Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing, University of Adelaide and Cryoclock Pty Ltd for the 2018 Defence Science and Technology Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia
  • Alan Duffy from Swinburne University and The Royal Institute of Australia for the 2018 Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science.

Congratulations to quantum computing scientist Rose Ahlefeldt who is the 2018 ACT Scientist of the Year—an award that celebrates Canberra’s emerging scientists. Rose will spend the next 12 months inspiring young people to pursue careers in STEM, while promoting the ACT as a centre of excellence for science and research.

Also in this bulletin, the Asian Physics Olympiad want you to submit your toughest physics questions and Phil Dooley is looking for presenters for Physics in the Pub in Brisbane. Nominations are now open for NSW AIP’s Annual Postgraduate Awards Day.

Our last two bulletins have included surveys about AIP activities and your preferred time of the year for Congress. We haven’t got enough responses yet to share the results, so would love you to complete the surveys before the end of September. Your feedback will help to shape the future direction of the AIP.
